FAQ

What does 'gold filled' mean?

Despite how it sounds, gold filled metal is not actually filled with gold. Rather, it is a composite metal made by heat and pressure bonding a thin layer of 14 or 12 carat gold to a center core of a base metal such as brass.

What does 'vermeil' mean?

Pronounced 'ver-may', vermeil is the term given to jewellery with a coating of gold on sterling silver. The layer of gold is thicker than in 'gold plated' but thinner than in 'gold filled'.

What is the difference between 'gold filled' and 'gold plated'?

Gold-filled is made by using heat and pressure to bond a thin layer of carat gold to a base metal core. The value of gold filled is greater than gold plated because gold filled has an actual layer of carat gold, not just a microscopic film, as is the case with gold plated items.
